First it was gin and tonics. Then it was gourmet burgers. But now, there’s a new culinary trend sweeping ��������ϲʿ���ֱ�� – the art of enjoying a leisurely brunch. You know a trend is popular they try to give it an official portmanteau hashtag. Sorry guys, but “#Brunchelona” doesn’t quite work.

Though the hashtag has not proved successful, the scene has and in 2024 you’ll find dozens of great options, at different price points, throughout the city. Although, this being Spain, many hungry customers don’t start queueing up until 1pm or later. While that is probably late enough to qualify for “lunch”, rather than something that comes between breakfast and lunch, we won’t quibble.

In fact, most brunch restaurants open between 9-10am, and close at 4-5pm, giving you a sizeable window to fuel up in. Some of the Irish and international pubs, offering Bottomless Brunches, tend to serve it up at weekends only…

Fancy something more exotic? What about enjoying brunch on a sailing yacht? Or even a party boat!

The 19 Best Brunch Places in ��������ϲʿ���ֱ��

Now comes the real question – where can you find the best brunch in ��������ϲʿ���ֱ��? I’ve rounded up a handful of my favourites, along with when exactly they serve up the scrambled eggs and pancakes…

1. Milk Bar & Bistro

With cosy plush sofas, glittering chandeliers and 50s-style wallpaper, just popping in for a quick drink at Milk can make you feel a little special. The venue is a stalwart of the city’s brunch scene, with their famous Recovery Brunch served every day from 9am in the morning to 4:30pm in the afternoon. You can order classics like eggs benedict, American pancakes or an English-style fried breakfast with bacon, beans et al., or you could opt for more unique items like their triple-whammy breakfast burger, crab eggs benedict or ‘Nurse Jackie’ (toasted goat’s cheese with piquillo peppers). Whatever you order, I suggest a Bloody Mary or glass of Cava to wash it down!

2. Barcino Food Brunch

Recently relocating to the gorgeous Rambla del Poblenou (one of ��������ϲʿ���ֱ��’s coolest streets!), offers locals and savvy travellers a fantastic menu of healthy brunches. Each dish is made with carefully sourced ingredients, and the menu features plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. It’s hard to beat their “Benedict Classic”, while the house burger with bacon and asparagus won’t leave you hungry – and the açai bowl and kimchi quinoa are deliciously good for you! The restaurant has a unique selling point too: it’s the only place in ��������ϲʿ���ֱ�� where you can grab a Poptail (an ice lolly in a cocktail). Barcino is a wonderful looking locale with a trencadis-style marble floor, pastel blue and turquoise painted wood, sturdy tables and chairs, and prints of Banksy artwork on the walls. It also has a large street terrace, so you can enjoy breakfast directly on the Rambla del Poblenou!

3. Eat My Trip

��������ϲʿ���ֱ��’s most Instagrammable brunch can be devoured with gusto just near Tetuan, in Eixample. There’s more than a touch of Alice in Wonderland about this passion project, from the cute pastel-blue tables on the terrace to the pink candyfloss platter that covers the house waffles. The short but sweet menu draws on influences from every corner of the globe, catering to cosmopolitan young travellers and hip locals, with options like Thai Eggs Benedict, Brunch From The Alps, Not So French Toast and Norway Bagels. You can also lay your lips on homemade cakes, artisan ice cream and sumptuous smoothies. A second branch, called has opened in Gracia (near Lesseps metro).

4. Faire Brunch & Drinks

This chic vegetarian brunch spot has a fantastic claim to be the most ethical eaterie in ��������ϲʿ���ֱ��, as not only does it use 99% locally sourced and 100% cruelty-free products, but it runs on 100% renewal energy, uses filtered water, and even recycles its food waste into compost (if you’re lucky they’ll give you a bag to fertilise your house plants!). The menu is small, but still tantalising enough to cause plenty of indecision as you waver over avocado toasts, shakshuka eggs or their fabulous Beyond Burger, all of which taste great with their oven-baked sweet potatoes. Those who prefer a sweeter start to the day can opt for granola, pancakes or the chia pudding and passion fruit bowl. Retro-heads will love Faire’s decor, which plunges diners into a romantic analogue age of typewriters, LPs and transistor radios.

5. Firebug

Located on the gorgeous tree-lined Passeig de Sant Joan boulevard, Firebug opened at the beginning of 2016 and quickly made its mark on the brunch scene. Their focus is on serving fresh, whole foods and healthy ingredients. Favourites include their traditional fry-up with bacon, beans, mushroom and eggs, chorizo hash with manchego cheese and turkish eggs ‘Cilbir’, whilst you could get adventurous and order the devilled crab. Vegan options include sourdough bruschettas and Asian-style avocado salads. There’s a great terrace too, for enjoying your food al fresco.

6. Belushi’s ‘Bottomless Brunch’

Popular with hip travellers (many of whom are staying at the St. Christopher’s Inn hostel upstairs!), this spacious international bar serves up a ‘Bottomless Brunch’ at weekends only to hungry young things. The concept is simple. Pay €20 for one brunch dish, one premium cocktail and infinite mimosas or cervezas within a 90 minute sitting. Not a bad deal at all! On the menu you’ll find the likes of Porky Pancakes, Avotoastie & Eggs and BLT Brioche, the latter two of which are vegetarian friendly. You can arrive anytime between 12pm and 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays to tuck in! During week days, you can still grab an English Breakfast and other options until 1pm. 7. Cinderella

This American restaurant and cocktail bar serves up killer brunches, inspired by the Stateside dining scene, every Wednesday to Sunday from 9am. Sample dishes include: southern fried chicken with Belgian waffles, Southwest steak and eggs, Fifth Avenue club sandwich, and the house macaroni and cheese, while those watching their cholesterol can opt for the likes of a San Fran açai bowl, Midwestern chef salad or Upper East Side bagel, amongst many others. Fancy a boozy breakfast? Then make your brunch ‘bottomless’ with 60 mins of mimosas, sangria, wine or cava for just €15 more. At weekends live DJs often drop by for Cinderella’s Brunch & Beats… you shall go to the ball! Just check the events section of their website.

8. Gigi Von Tapas

Order your brunch served on antique china plates from the Encants Flea Market in this gorgeous new locale next to the Monumental Bullfighting Arena. On the extensive menu there are eggs any way you like them, including three different types of Benedict, Turkish eggs and Whirling Dervish (omelette with smoked haddock and crème fraîche), all made from free range eggs. Plus there’s a tantalising range of burgers and bagels on offer, and a handful of sinfully sweet dishes. Depending on the weather, opt for the recycled Norwegian tabletops of the interior or a seat out on the street terrace with great vistas of the aforementioned arena. If you can’t wait for brunch they are open from 9am for breakfast.

9. Flaherty’s ‘Bottomless Brunch’

For a more boozy brunch look no further than Flaherty’s where your eggs’n’toast come served with 2 hours of all-you-can-drink Cava, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. First, choose from one of three time slots – 11am until 1pm, 12-2pm or 1-3pm – then select one of eight classic brunch dishes, like Traditional Irish Breakfast, Eggs Benedict or Avocado Toast, and then simply grab your Cava glass and demand a top up! Your €30 ticket also gets you a complementary cocktail, such as a Bloody Mary or Pornstar Martini. Overall, Flaherty’s ‘Bottomless Brunch’ is a fun social event, perfect for large groups of friends such as birthdays or bachelorette parties. And if you just fancy a bacon butty, you can always call by Flaherty’s any day of the week for their all day breakfast menu.

10. Flax & Kale

A mostly vegetarian restaurant, Flax & Kale serves brunch on weekends and holidays from 10am to 5pm. If you’re into eating clean, go here to order things like vegan pear-chocolate muffins, coconut chia pudding and healthy fruit and yoghurt bowls. They also serve heartier main courses like pastas and salads. Find it on the top of Carrer Tallers, in the Raval district.

11. Citizen Cafe

This café has a rustic, old-world feel with its wooden decor and stylish vintage furniture, and I love how they repurposed some old crates into outdoor seating. They serve brunch from 8am to 5pm Sundays to Tuesdays, and 8am til midnight Wednesdays to Saturdays, with a menu that features dishes such as eggs benedict, pulled pork sandwiches, pancakes and French toast. They’re a hit amongst the digital nomad crowd, as they have good WiFi and free charging stations for your devices, so a great place to get some work done with breakfast.

12. Picnic

Just steps away from the Parc de la Ciudatella, Picnic’s location makes it ideal for a lazy start to the day followed by a spot of sunbathing in the park. You can get a range of brunch items served tapas style, including sandwiches, salads, toast and egg dishes. They also make seasonal bellinis. I love the vibe here and the windows let in plenty of light, so it’s never gloomy.

13. GAIA

Carrer Tuset is the street to hang out for young fashionable locals, and this brightly-coloured venue attracts them like moths to a flame, with its outlandish interior decor, street terrace and quality food and drinks. GAIA’s brunch menu is divided into ‘Classics’ like their Maxi Americano, ‘Healthy’ such as their Açai Bowl and ‘Sweet’ featuring three different types of pancake. A range of coffees, and ‘Detox’ juices should perk you up… or select a Aperol Spritz, mimosa or Spicy Bloody Mary from their ‘Retox’ menu. Full menu on their website.

14. La Galena

If you ever find yourself hungry in Poble Sec then look no further than this delightful coffee shop, which is on one my favourite squares in the district. While their passion is coffee, and they serve up brews with locally roasted beans, the folks at La Galena also serve up a mean brunch – which includes Greek yoghurt bowls, various bruschettas and most of your classic brekkie options.

15. El Arbol

This stylish venue can be found on the leafy Passeig de Sant Joan boulevard, one of ��������ϲʿ���ֱ��’s most charming streets. The homely interior is full of exposed brick work and wood panels, while plush sofas and swing-seats at the back add a quirky touch. On the menu are toasts (the salmon and mango is great), pancakes, bagels and smoothies galore, while El Arbol does a fine line in seductively-tasty cakes. If the weather’s warm, the pastel coloured tables and chairs of their street terrace is as good as place as any in BCN to watch the world go by. No website, but you can find them at number 33 Passeig de Sant Joan.

16. Caravelle

Caravelle’s menu takes its inspiration from all corners of the globe, and their brunch menu has some especially tasty items that you may not have tried elsewhere. The baked eggs based on Moroccan cuisine are one of their standout items, as is their coconut French toast topped with ice cream and strawberries. They also make an excellent homemade toasted muesli. As it’s just steps away from the MACBA and CCCB museums, it’s a great place to get a bite to eat before heading off to take in some culture.

17. Can Dende

The hipster’s choice of brunch spot, Can Dende is a charming bolt-hole sized eaterie in Poblenou. The succinct menu includes pulled pork sandwiches, several varieties of scrambled eggs, pancakes and some tasty tapas, while the homemade pink lemonade is very refreshing on a hot summer’s day. Due to its popularity you should get there early or be prepared wait a little while to be seated, especially at weekends. Open 11:00 to 15:30 during weekdays and 10:30 to 16:00 at weekends.

18. Brunch & Cake

One of five locations in the same family, this chain of restaurants is one of the most popular places in the city to fuel up for the day with brunch served around the clock. It doesn’t matter which location you go to, almost all of them will be packed throughout the day. The menus are updated frequently, but expect a twist on your favourite foods, such as eggs benedict served atop a waffle or sandwiches with brie, strawberries and caramelised onions.

19. Federal

Federal was one of the first cafés to hit it big on the ��������ϲʿ���ֱ�� scene, and it’s since opened a second location in the Catalan capital, as well as ones in Madrid and Valencia. Their food continues to stand out, particularly the avocado toast, breakfast burgers and egg dishes. Order one of their creamy flat white coffees and a slice of cake to finish off your extended breakfast. Not everyone knows about their tranquil roof terrace, so take my advice and try and grab a space up top!
